About Roberto Moya: Art Reviews

The Christmas Show at Galería Palomas
- José A. Pérez Ruiz, El Reportero. 29 December 1986Translated from the Spanish by Susana Ramirez de Arellano
“In the Christmas exhibition at Galería Palomas, Moya allows us to see the constant quality that he delivers in his work. 'A través del espejo' is a nude of a stout yet well-formed woman that distances itself from the classic and Renaissance ideals. Her coquetry and femininity reflect that the artist responds to consistent concepts of beauty despite the fluctuations of fashion. Peering into this quicksilver mirror allows us to appreciate the image from different angles. Next to the dresser in which the woman applies her make-up hangs a wedding photo that presumably corresponds to her betrothal. This way, the painter concedes to the observer a point of reference from which to compare past and present. The semi-darkness of the room turns denser at the sides of the canvas; this recourse permits the objects' silhouettes that surround the woman to dissipate, rendering her the center of attraction..."
“Yet another painting that conjures up longing is titled El Paso de Bolero. We see in the painting a mature couple that dances to the rhythms of romantic music. The physical intimacy imposed by the melody on the dancers is illustrated by Moya with the emotions that this closeness entails...”
The “criollismo” of Jíbaro transports us to moments in the past that formed the Puerto Rican people. A worry-free and gentle campesino riding his small horse can be seen. The horse and its rider are illustrated here as if they were going to charge the viewer.
