Two Moya Paintings at the Dorado Beach Hotel
- José A. Pérez Ruiz, El Reportero. 29 December 1986Translated from the Spanish by Susana Ramirez de Arellano
He also captured in all its splendor the thick fronds characteristic of our island. Voluminous plants whose growth is helped by the absence of marked climatic cycles are brought to life here in all their magnificence.
“The collection of paintings dedicated to the exuberant tropical island flora is inspired by the Sierra de Luquillo. When he was commissioned to do the work [El Yunque III], Roberto Moya decided to take into consideration the ambiance in which the piece would live. He undertook a study of the factors that needed to be considered for his work to integrate naturally into the surrounding milieu. His investigation of the prevailing space and colors led him to undertake some sacrifices. One of them was not to use the reds and violets that are prevalent in his paintings. He imbued the panorama with the particularities of the place and limited himself to highlighting the variations of blue, ochre, and green..."
“The hues of the dense beach vegetation of Dorado bubble up to the surface. To render this, Moya incorporated levels of abstraction from what was reality; both aesthetic currents are assisted by an attempt to use as much of the inventory of forms found in nature. He sprayed the perimeter with luminal fragments and alternated with the faint shadows of light that subsist among the foliage of dead leaves. With great sensibility, Moya managed to incorporate in the different canvases of this series meteorological agents such as heat, evaporation, and humidity; withered pieces inject veracity into these views in much the same way..."
